Hey Ho: Another Mixed Media Encaustic Birthday Card

I made this card for my husband’s recent birthday. The support’s a 7″x5″ canvas board. Again, I’m experimenting with collage, modelling paste, shellac, encaustic and glitter and sandpaper and acrylic medium, and, and, and … There are several layers to this, each mauled to within an inch of its life with one instrument of torture or another. The image is the boat we’re doing up (a 1970s Albin Vega). The boat in reality looks a lot better than on this card as we’ve almost finished stripping the layers of antifouling paint from the hull. It’s not a job I want to do again in a tearing hurry and that’s a fact. Continue reading →

Walking the Earth II

Below The Line: Imprinting and Incorporating

A little more progress on my personal art project: Below The Line, which is essentially about making the invisible, visible. Inspiration often comes from non-artistic sources and the image here is from one of the recyclable cardboard containers that my Riverford organic veggies arrive in each week, courtesty of Liz and Caroline (the organic sisters!) normally Liz. This one contained my order of Portobello mushrooms and as you see, the mushrooms’ natural die has stained/imprinted the cardboard. I’ve been recycling these lovely prints into seed boxes or composting them. I’ll keep them now as each time, the print is different. I’ll be eating a lot more Portobello mushrooms from now on. And exploring veggie staining. Continue reading →

More on ‘The Studio’: Travelling Canvas Project

April Cole set up and runs The Studio, a Facebook group of mixed media artists. I’m taking part in the July project. 5″x7″ canvas boards travel round and each artist receiving it adds something. It arrives back to the hands of the originator, transformed. I sent mine to Minnesota for its first additions and I’ve just received my first to add to, from artist Jackie Davidson, of Mobile, Alabama. Oh, how exotic, to be coming and going from such places!
