What I’ve Been Singing: For You: John Denver

I was introduced to this song last week as a possibility for my ‘pop’ repertoire. It’s a lovely lovely song from the lovely John Denver whose tragic and too early passing, is to be forever mourned.  Sing along!  Sing like there’s nobody listening!  Here are the lyrics:

Just to look in your eyes again
Just to lay in your arms
Just to be the first one always there for you
Just to live in your laughter
Just to sing in your heart
Just to be everyone of your dreams come true

Just to sit by your window
Just to touch in the night
Just to offer a prayer each day for you
Just to long for your kisses
Just to dream of your sighs
Just to know that I’d give my life for you

For you for the rest of my life
For you all the best of my life
For you alone, only for you

Just to wake up each morning
Just to you by my side
Just to know that you’re never really far away
Just a reason for living
Just to say I adore
Just to know that you’re here in my heart to stay

For you for the rest of my life
For you all the best of my life
For you alone, only for you

Just the words of a love song
Just the beat of my heart
Just the pledge of my life, my love, for you.

I will definitely record this if I don’t pass away first!  (I might even do it as a ghost).  He was very brave to use all those ‘justs’. (Not a favourite vowel of mine to sing – and over and over)!

John lived in Aspen, Colorado.  He was named Poet Laureate of Colorado in 1974 and in 2007 it adopted Rocky Mountain High as a state song.  In the 80s he began to devote much of his time to humanitarian causes, especially in the field of conservation. He founded two environmental groups, travelled to Africa to witness extreme poverty first hand. He also worked with NASA to develop the Citizens in Space programme. Squeaky clean?  In his 1994 autobiography Take Me Home he wrote of his drug use, marital infidelity and history of domestic violence. He also painted and was a keen photographer. His love of flying led to his death in 1997 when his amateur-built plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean. Want more?  Read all about John here  and here and lots of other places.
